Zoom R20 Multi-Track Recorder Overview

With six XLR inputs, two combo inputs, and 16 tracks of recording (8 simultaneously), the R20 is perfect for solo musicians to full bands.

The R20 records directly to SDHC or SDXC cards up to 1TB (not included). The colour-coded faders, gain knobs and track regions on the 4.3-inch colour touchscreen ensure an unparalleled simple workflow. The R20 is the first multi-track recorder that allows accessibility for the visually impaired as the R20 app features VoiceOver and VoiceOver Gestures. Furthermore, the R20 offers 150 internal rhythm patterns and supports Standard MIDI files to import and playback bass lines, melodies, piano parts, etc. to create backing tracks with ease.

In addition, the R20 features an internal synthesizer with 18 sounds +1 drum kit, playable via a MIDI keyboard connected via USB-C. To spice things up, and EQ, compressor and gate as well as a full MFX processor, which is compatible with our Guitar Lab software, are at your fingertips. The R20 works also as an 8-in/4-out USB-C audio interface with a Mac or PC.

Where to start? Well, put it this way, I sent the R20 back and bought the R8 instead. Just too many basic features missing I expect at a minimum on a MTR unit. The touchscreen is nice yet a pain to use (short freezes when doing basic editing) and it is definitely not a replacement for actual buttons and dials. Not having any physical controls makes everything tedious/monotonous after a (short) while. Also the processor seems slower than the R8 which is apparently yesteryear's tech, further compounding it's shortcomings. IMO this is a shameful effort by Zoom's own previous standards. I say this as a user of Boss, Yamaha and Zoom mtr's over the years. This feels like a far from finished product I'm afraid. Long live the R8!!!

This replaces an older Zoom R24 reorder. This is much easier to navigate via its coloured and more user friendly interface but some of the older add-ons are missing, like multiple drum sets. generally though much better quality and build and sound output.
