Gibson Custom Collectors Choice (#35) 1959 Les Paul 9-0627 (Gruhn Burst) Overview
When Vic DaPra found original serial number 9 0627 back in 1984 he didn't have the internet or email. He had received a call from a salesman he knew at Gruhn Guitars who informed Vic that a '59 with an amazing top and color had just been brought in by its original owner. Vic then waited a few days for Polaroid pictures to show up in the mail. Ah, the good old days! The guitar turned out to be beautiful from every angle, exhibiting a lot of character in the color. The Gruhn salesman, a very accomplished guitar player that was touring with Hank Williams Junior at the time, was more than happy to describe the guitar's "rich harmonic and balanced" tone to Vic, who promptly worked out the details and acquired a guitar he's had in his collection ever since. For Vic and collectors like him, few guitars, if any, become permanently affixed in their collection as most will rotate from one collection to another. But this one has captivated Vic, and others around the world, since he took delivery of it. It's been featured in many a book on vintage guitars, often held up as the "top of all tops" when it comes to 1959 Les Paul Standards. Gibson Custom has worked closely with Vic to replicate this Gruhn "˜Burst in precise detail, and Custom has been making trips to source the very specific tops needed to create the run.
